Mute or block your ex on Snapchat: what they’ll see

How to mute your ex’s Story, remove them as a friend or block them on Snapchat, from Snapchat’s help pages, and what they can still see afterwards.

On Snapchat you can quiet someone down, cut them off from your private Stories, or block them completely. The steps come from Snapchat’s own help pages, checked on 25 September 2026. If a button has moved, the linked page has the current steps.

Which one to pick

  • Mute if you want their Story and alerts out of the way and nothing to change on their side.
  • Remove them as a friend if you don’t want them seeing your private Stories.
  • Block if you want to stop Snaps and Chats in both directions.

Mute their Story or their chats

  1. From the Camera screen, swipe right to open Chat.
  2. Press and hold their name.
  3. Tap Story Settings and switch on Mute Story.

To mute their messages and calls, press and hold their name, tap Chat and Notification Settings, then Notification Settings, and switch on Mute Chats and Mute Calls.

They aren’t told. They can still view your Stories and send you Snaps and Chats; you just won’t get alerts.1

Remove them as a friend

  1. Swipe right to open Chat.
  2. Press and hold their name.
  3. Tap Manage Friendship, then Remove Friend.

They lose access to your private Stories. They can still see anything you’ve made public and, depending on your privacy settings, may still be able to Chat or Snap you.2

Block them

  1. Swipe right to open Chat.
  2. Press and hold their name.
  3. Tap Manage Friendship, then Block.

They aren’t told, though they might work it out when they can’t reach you. They can’t send you Snaps or Chats, they stop seeing your Stories, and your location on Snap Map is hidden from them. They can still see what you post publicly, such as Public Stories and Spotlight.3

A group chat you share isn’t affected. You’ll still see what they send to the group, so leave it if you don’t want to.3

If you still want to look

That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean you failed. Research on checking an ex online is in why you keep checking your ex’s profile. When the urge comes, pop a sheet of bubble wrap first. In nocnt, checking their profile has its own button, and logging it doesn’t reset your count.
