Mute or block your ex on Facebook: what they’ll see
Snooze, unfollow, Take a Break, restrict or block your ex on Facebook: what each one does, from Facebook’s help pages, and what they can still see.
Facebook has more in-between options than most apps, including one made for breakups. The steps come from Facebook’s own help pages, checked on 25 September 2026. If a button has moved, the linked page has the current steps.
Which one to pick
- Snooze to hide their posts for 30 days without them knowing.
- Unfollow to hide their posts for good while you stay friends.
- Take a Break to see less of them and limit what they see of you.
- Block if you want a clean stop in both directions.
Snooze them for 30 days
On one of their posts in your Feed, tap Options and choose Snooze [their name] for 30 days. They aren’t told.1
Unfollow them
Go to their profile, tap Following, then Unfollow. You stay friends, but their posts stop showing up in your Feed.2
Take a Break
Facebook built Take a Break for breakups. It’s offered when you change your relationship status to single or divorced, and you can take a break from any profile you want to see less of. Its help page describes what it does but doesn’t list the steps.3
What it does:
- Their posts, and posts they’re tagged in, stop appearing in your Feed, and Facebook stops suggesting you message or tag them.
- They’re added to your Restricted List, so they only see your public posts and posts you tag them in.
- You can limit who sees past posts you’re both tagged in.
Restrict them yourself
To put them on your Restricted List directly: go to their profile, tap Friends, then Edit Friend Lists, tap Restricted, and tap Done. They still see what you post publicly, but not posts shared with Friends.4
Block them
- Go to their profile.
- Tap the three dots or More.
- Tap Block, then Block again to confirm.
They aren’t told. They can’t see your posts, tag you, invite you to events or groups, start a conversation with you, or add you as a friend. Blocking also unfriends them.5
Worth knowing:
- Block is no longer in the menu on posts in Feed. Use their profile, or Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Blocking.
- Blocking doesn’t cover groups, apps or games you’re both in.
- Blocking one of their profiles doesn’t block their other profiles.
If you still want to look
That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean you failed. Research on checking an ex online is in why you keep checking your ex’s profile. When the urge comes, pop a sheet of bubble wrap first. In nocnt, checking their profile has its own button, and logging it doesn’t reset your count.
